The networks got lambasted for 'calling' the state of Florida early (before the polls closed) in 2000. This was morally the wrong thing to do as it influenced turnout. They were not about to make that mistake again this time so they waited until the West Coast polls closed and called it immediately.<br /><br />A better example might be the latter couple months of the Hilary campaign. She was fighting with the slimmest of chances but we kept hearing how close the race was.
